A Sore Knee Forced Me to Slow Down and I'm Glad it Did: Camping in the Loess Hills of Iowa

This week, I headed into Iowa's Loess Hills near Murray Hill for a simple overnight camping trip. After dealing with a sore knee, I knew I needed to stay close to my 4Runner and avoid a long hike. Sometimes our plans change, and this trip was a reminder that slowing down isn't always a bad thing. Rain had fallen throughout the morning, and the air was thick with heat and humidity when I arrived. I found a quiet spot beneath a large oak tree, surrounded by tall prairie grass, and set up my tent with a tarp awning for a little extra shelter and comfort. Keeping things simple, I made honey-garlic Korean-style drumsticks with rice for supper and spent most of my time filming the beauty around me. The warm night eventually gave way to cooler morning temperatures, and after a small breakfast, I found myself doing something I hadn't done in years. I spent the morning chasing grasshoppers, bees, and butterflies with my camera. As a child, I would catch insects and keep them in mason jars. This time, I found myself pursuing them for a different reason—to share their beauty with all of you. Somewhere between the prairie grass, the oak trees, and the insects moving through the morning light, I was reminded how much joy can be found in the simplest moments. This wasn't an epic adventure or a difficult backpacking trip. It was something quieter. My knee needed rest, my body needed recovery, and my mind needed a reminder to slow down and pay attention. Sometimes the smallest trips leave the biggest impression. Thanks for joining me on another adventure in the Loess Hills. — Eric #Camping #LoessHills #SoloCamping #NaturePhotography #Butterflies #OutdoorCooking #IowaOutdoors #CampingLife #SawmillHollowOutdoors #SlowLiving
