This is an excerpt from our episode #186 with cattle rancher Shiro Nishimura, where he talks about one of the biggest challenges he faced in life: the confiscation of savings during the Collor government in the early 1990s. At the time, the government froze a large portion of the money Brazilians had saved in bank accounts and savings accounts, in an attempt to control the out-of-control inflation in the country. The measure caught companies and families by surprise, paralyzing the economy and affecting thousands of businesses throughout Brazil. Shiro recounts that this moment deeply shook the finances of his family and Jacto. To help his father and prevent the company from closing its doors, he had to make extremely difficult decisions, selling farms and more than 13,000 head of cattle. According to him, the goal was to preserve the company and save a significant portion of jobs during a time of enormous economic uncertainty.
