1213 PM — How Japan’s Battleship Mutsu Exploded, Killing 768 Men
On a summer afternoon in 1943, one of the most powerful battleships in the Imperial Japanese Navy was cut in half inside her own harbor. No enemy submarine. No bomber. No shell was fired at her. She died in front of her own fleet, in the Inland Sea of Japan. Of the 1,474 men aboard, 1,121 were dead within four minutes. Among them was her captain, Teruhiko Miyoshi, who had written letters home to his wife that she would not receive for another seven months. This is the story of the battleship Mutsu — and of the mystery Japan buried with her. A mystery still lying, right now, forty meters under Hiroshima Bay. If your father or grandfather served in the Imperial Japanese Navy, please leave his name, ship, or memory in the comments. This channel remembers them all.
