In the year 1500, Portugal was at the height of maritime exploration, seeking to expand its trade routes. King Manuel I sent Pedro Álvares Cabral to lead a fleet of 13 vessels bound for the Indies. The journey was challenging, marked by long months at sea, poor nutrition and diseases such as scurvy, which weakened the crew. During the crossing, the fleet moved away from the African coast and, on April 22, 1500, sighted a new land. Initially named "Ilha de Vera Cruz", the territory soon received the name "Land of Santa Cruz" and, later, Brazil, due to the abundance of brazilwood, a valuable wood for European dyeing. The Portuguese disembarked and met the Tupiniquin indigenous people, with whom they had their first peaceful contact, exchanging gifts and observing cultural differences. Before leaving, Cabral left two men condemned to death on the newly found land, a common practice on expeditions to test adaptation to the environment. Of the 13 vessels that left Portugal, one, under the command of Vasco de Ataíde, mysteriously disappeared in the Atlantic. Another was sent back to report the events to the king. With the remaining 11, Cabral headed for the Indies, but lost four more ships along the way. Only seven reached their destination, and on the return journey, two more vessels were lost, leaving five that managed to return to Portugal. Despite the losses, the expedition was considered successful, as it consolidated the Portuguese presence in eastern trade and marked the beginning of European colonization in Brazil.
