'En Portada', presented by Lorenzo Milá, ends its season with 'The footprint of plastic', coinciding with the start of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP 28) in Dubai. A report that analyses plastic recycling in Europe, one of the most worrying environmental problems. Europe does not have the capacity to recycle all the plastic it consumes and sells part of this waste abroad, especially to Turkey. A country that has become a power by importing waste to recycle it. It buys paper, used cardboard and more and more plastics. Then it transforms the plastic into raw material, pellets, and sells it back to Europe, or to other countries, to manufacture more products. Since China banned the import of plastics in 2018, seeing the environmental damage they cause, Turkey has taken over. Now plastic recycling has become a large industry that moves millions. But behind these figures there is a more complex reality. Some of the plastic entering the country ends up dumped in a landfill or burned on the side of a road. Therefore, plastic in Turkey has also become a serious environmental problem.
