FUSION DUETS - PIOLO PASCUAL, JULIE ANNE SAN JOSE, LA DIVA, CAMILLE LOPEZ-MOLINA, ERVIN L - CCP 40th

Danny Tan's Throwback #40 FUSION DUETS was another monumental challenge posed by the brilliant mind of Mr. Monino S. Duque. How in the world could I juxtapose operatic arias with Filipino kundimans and Pinoy pop songs! Given the liberty to choose what songs I wanted to use, I somehow found a way to create counterpoints for the three musical genres. "What struck me as truly remarkable were the fusion duets — the juxtaposing of operatic arias with kundimans and other traditional native songs. The marvelous contrapuntal work by musical arranger Danny Tan produced beautifully harmonious melodies." - Ms. Rosalinda L. Orosa, music critic "Multi-awarded composer Daniel Tan handled the musical arrangements for the third suite dubbed as “Fusion Duets," which cross-bred popular music with classical pieces to produce an innovative sound. Tan demonstrated that he is still an influential creative force, seamlessly mixing music bars from Quando Me’n Vo Soletta from Giacomo Puccini’s La Boheme, Nessun Dorma from Puccini’s Turandot, Anak Dalita by Francisco Santiago and Deogracias Rosario, Nasaan Ka Irog by Nicanor Abelardo and Narciso Asistio, Kung Ako’y Iiwan Mo by George Canseco, Sana’y Maghintay ang Walang Hanggan by Willy Cruz and Baby Gil, Kahit Isang Saglit by Louie Ocampo, and Ikaw ang Lahat sa Akin by Cecile Azarcon, among others." - Mr. Ibarra C. Mateo, journalist "The same level of creativity and artistry was also showcased in the fusion duets that featured classical singers and pop artists masterfully bridging the great divide between opera pieces such as Nessun Dorma and kundiman classics such as Nasaan Ka Irog, between Un Bel Di, Vedremo from M. Butterfly and Imelda Papin’s Bakit (Kung Liligaya Ka Sa Piling Ng Iba). Danny Tan, arranger, and Ryan Cayabyab, conductor, and all the performers truly deserved the standing ovation the audience gave them at the end of the gala." - Mr. Bong C.
