In the early 1950s, the hospital was transformed into a garment factory. Yi Yi, Lin Siyun’s niece, longed to become a fashion designer, but as the widow of a Nationalist officer, she faced both social stigma and professional barriers. Fortuitously, she met Wen Pu, an outstanding Party cadre. Amidst the policy of public-private partnerships, Yi Yi found her new path in life and career, while she and Wen Pu quietly forged a restrained yet tender romance. By the early 1990s, the old European-style house had been converted into a well-known hotel in Shanghai. Ye Xining, Yi Yi’s granddaughter, was preparing there for her best friend’s wedding when she was unexpectedly drawn into a conspiracy. Dismissed from her government post and left with nothing, she ventured into private business. There, she met Xiang Beichuan, who had suffered setbacks of his own.
