Years in the Making — Meet Our New NRD Speakers!
👉 Allie: https://gr-research.com/allie/ 👉 Maddie: https://gr-research.com/maddie/ For years I’ve been fascinated by the way different loudspeaker designs interact with a listening room — especially the sense of openness and spatial realism I’ve experienced with great open-baffle speakers. That curiosity eventually led to a collaboration with Danny Richie of GR Research. Together, we set out to explore whether some of that expansive, room-filling presentation could be achieved in a more traditional boxed loudspeaker design. The result is the beginning of the NRD Series, starting with two speakers built around the same core philosophy: Allie and Maddie. Both models use a small wide-band driver to handle most of the critical vocal range, combined with a carefully integrated rear-firing ambience driver designed to introduce subtle spatial cues into the listening room. The goal is a presentation that feels coherent, natural, and connected to the space around you. While Allie represents the more compact stand-mount expression of this concept, Maddie expands on the same design approach with deeper bass extension and greater room-filling authority. During the voicing process, we also explored technologies developed by Caelin Gabriel at Shunyata Research, including KPIP v2 conductor treatment and HARP resonance-reduction modules. Incorporating these ideas ultimately helped refine the soundstage and imaging in ways that felt meaningful during our listening sessions. This project was never about replacing other loudspeaker philosophies — it was about chasing a particular listening experience that has resonated with me for many years.
