Twister...Ride It Out Queue (1998) Tornado Home Videos [2020 version]

Originally published on August 14, 2020 This fan restoration project was created to preserve and recreate the iconic tornado home videos once featured in the queue line of Twister...Ride It Out. The attraction used a compilation of real storm footage throughout the pre-show experience, helping build suspense and immersing guests into the atmosphere. Just to be clear, this project was originally created in 2020, so some of the footage researched and used at the time may not be completely accurate to the original sources featured in the attraction. During the restoration process, I was still discovering new media, recordings, and preservation material related to the queue experience. As more footage and references surfaced over the years, certain scenes and monitor segments became easier to identify and compare to the original attraction presentation. I had some home videos finished, but never released. Years ago, I removed this project from my channel out of caution regarding copyright and preservation concerns. Looking back, I regretted deleting a piece of work that many theme park fans, weather enthusiasts, and preservation communities appreciated. Since so much media connected to the attraction has become difficult to find over time, I decided to share this recreation again so the community can experience and archive a part of the attraction’s history. [DESCRIPTION] The queue monitors were designed to simulate unstable live weather broadcasts during a severe tornado outbreak. Videos included television static, signal glitches, wind roars, lightning flashes, distorted transitions, tornado facts, and edited crowd reactions captured from storm recordings to create a chaotic emergency atmosphere. Sudden flashes and screen interruptions were intentionally used throughout the monitors to grab guests attention as they walked through the queue, making the environment feel active, immersive, and unpredictable within the universe their going in. Each video begins with the location and date being introduced first playing Waterworld (1995) score "Speargun" and other one with the opening theme of Jurassic Park (1993) as the video is very dangerous to be or too intense to watch. In addition, the television screens show tornado facts that guests can read while waiting in line. Each fact features a symbol being shown on the upper left side and a tornado background. Some of the facts include debris flying across the screen. Occasionally, the Twister logo will be shown on the screens as Bill Paxton can be heard telling guests to follow the safety instructions. I still hope to revisit and rework this project again in the future, although I currently do not know when that will happen. Reconstructing the original queue experience is a difficult challenge due to the limited amount of surviving source material and live footage captured inside the attraction. While guests walked through the queue, most recordings could not fully capture the monitors or atmosphere on screen because visitors were continuously rushed through the pre show. Many of my original editing assets used for this recreation were lost over time, including visual effects presets, synced cuts, transitions, and project work created in VEGAS Pro. Future restorations may require rebuilding much of the project from scratch. If anyone wishes to collaborate, contribute preservation material, or help piece together parts of the original queue experience behind the magic of the attraction, it would be greatly appreciated. This project is intended purely for preservation, educational, archival, and nostalgic purposes as a fan-made tribute to the attraction and its history. Whether you’re a longtime fan of the ride, researching the attraction for a wiki or archive, or simply nostalgic for the era of 90s Universal Studios experiences, I hope this recreation helps keep that memory alive for future generations. I do not own any of the original footage, audio, sound effects, or visual materials used in this recreation.
