History of Igbo Land ,The Rise And Fall

When the British evaded what became the present day Nigeria, the Fulani and Kanuri empire rained supreme in the North and Oyo empire in the South including the Aro Confederacy, the Bini Kingdom and the Igala kingdom etc. All those indigenous powers were violently dismantled and a new democratic system was instituted. The new institution presented an exciting competition for ethnic political relevance and influence, the Igbos against all expectations lost out despite high education and economic influence. How did Igbos grab defeat in the jaws of victory? In this story we will go through how Igbos lost the battle and how Igbos can make a dramatic come back when everyone thought all hopes are gone. This is how it all started and evolved. On a quiet land of Arochukwu, sometime in the 16 century a system was taking shape. It did not look like an empire. There was no single king ruling over vast territory, no standing army in uniform ranks. But make no mistake—power was being built. Carefully. Strategically. Through alliances, trade networks, and belief systems that connected communities across regions. This system would later be known as the Aro Confederacy. For over two centuries, it became the most influential Igbo political and economic structure of its time. Then, in 1902, it collapsed. Not because it was weak, but because it faced something it did not fully understand: a modern imperial war machine. The British did not come as traders this time. They came with a plan, coordinated force, and overwhelming technological advantage. At the centre of that campaign was Sir Ralph Moore, the British High Commissioner of the Niger Coast Protectorate. His force included about 1,550 African soldiers—many of them Hausa and Yoruba—organized under the Southern Nigeria Regiment. Behind them were over 2,100 carriers (Efik, Ijaw, Ibibio, Yoruba) moving supplies, ammunition, and most importantly, Maxim guns. These weapons would decide the outcome long before the battle fully unfolded.
