A shuttle is actually a part of a weaving loom that runs back and forth, laying down the thread. This is roughly how traders ran in the 90s: abroad to buy goods, then back to Russia to sell at the markets. They emerged after the collapse of the Soviet Union, when the country was hit by an economic crisis. Wages depreciated, and people suddenly faced a choice: starve or urgently learn to earn money. Doctors, engineers, and teachers switched professions to trade. They went to Turkey for fur coats and shoes, to China for knitwear and toys, and to Poland and the Baltics for cosmetics and designer brands. But the worst began on the return journey. Bribes at customs, bandits at train stations, fights for market space. The constant risk of losing everything—money, goods, health, and sometimes even life. Moreover, most of the shuttle traders were women. Some got rich, some returned to their previous professions, some became alcoholics, and some died in fights. But all of them were reluctant heroes—people who pulled themselves, their families, and their country out of chaos. In this episode, Stas Guryanov met with former shuttle traders and heard their stories: how they survived, earned money, took risks, and lived in an era that some still call a time of opportunity, while others call the wild nineties. 00:00 Start 05:47 Shuttle traders – a symbol of the 90s: the story of Yulia, who carried goods across the border 07:48 After the collapse of the USSR: how people survived when wages devalued 10:48 Where shuttle traders traded: markets, shops, and the first big money 12:06 Nadezhda's story: how a young girl became a shuttle trader 14:07 What they brought from Turkey, China, and Poland – and where they earned the most 16:59 Luzhniki: how the Olympic stadium turned into a giant market 19:26 "Roof" for shuttle traders: how bandits sold protection and fear 21:09 Contract killings in the 90s: terrifying statistics of the era 22:19 Cherkizon and Izmailovsky Stadium: prisons, torture chambers, and a bunker under the market 24:45 "Fight Club" Cherkizovsky style: what happened Inside the Market 25:22 How much did protection cost and what did traders pay for? 26:44 How organized crime groups divided Moscow and why the police didn't intervene 28:32 Money was lying underfoot: how people were scammed at Cherkizon 29:37 How much did shuttle traders really earn? 32:52 Stars at the Market: who dressed at Cherkizon and Luzhniki 37:19 How goods from Cherkizon and Luzhniki were distributed throughout the country 39:40 How bandits stole goods and why the victims remained silent 43:25 Fans against markets: how football fans smashed shopping arcades 44:13 How the market began to dictate fashion and why Zaitsev was against it 46:19 Aggressive sales in the 2000s: rules for survival at the market 50:24 Telman Ismailov — the owner Cherkizon: How His Empire Was Built and How Much Money It Brought In 53:19 The Collapse of Cherkizon: Terrorist Attack, Fires, and the End of a Market Empire 54:07 Where Did the Shuttle Traders Go and What Did They Become After the 90s The People team thanks our heroines for participating in this episode: Nadezhda Bolotova https://www.instagram.com/nadezhda.bo... * https://t.me/kopytinapro https://youtube.com/@user-tv4pe1ye8n?...
