A True Lover Always Gives, Needs No Proof | A Study of the Book of Al-Hikam by Ibn Athaillah As-Sakandari 🌿 Is it true that love always demands reciprocation? Why do we often feel disappointed when our kindness goes unappreciated? Why are humans so busy seeking recognition for their sacrifices? And have we understood the true nature of love as taught by Allah's lovers? In an age filled with image, validation, and the need to be seen, giving often turns into a transaction. We help to be remembered. We share to be praised. We do good to be considered good. Even in worship, our hearts still unconsciously seek appreciation from others. Yet, true love never arises from a desire to be seen, but from a sincere desire to serve. Through a study of the Book of Al-Hikam by Imam Ibn Athaillah As-Sakandari, together we will delve into the deepest meaning of the true nature of a true lover. In the perspective of Sufism, a person who truly loves Allah is not preoccupied with counting what he has given. Instead, he realized that the ability to give was a gift from Allah alone. Therefore, he needed no proof of his love. That love spoke through morals, sincerity, patience, and devotion that flowed selflessly. Ibn Ata'illah taught that the essence of the spiritual journey is not showing off good deeds, but cleansing the heart of a sense of entitlement. The closer a person is to Allah, the less they desire human recognition. He understood that what matters most is not how people perceive them, but how Allah perceives their hearts. This study also invites us to understand that the greatest gift is not always material possessions. A sincere smile, a silent prayer, forgiving without being asked, listening attentively, and even continuing to do good to someone who has hurt us—all are forms of love born from a heart that has come to know Allah. The reality of modern life demonstrates the opposite. Many relationships become fragile due to too many demands and too little sincerity. Friendships end because of expectations. Brotherhoods are fractured by calculation. Even worship sometimes loses its soul because it is more preoccupied with pursuing human judgment than God's pleasure. In the midst of these conditions, the wisdom of Al-Hikam becomes very relevant. He reminded that people who know Allah will be more busy improving themselves than proving themselves to others. A true lover does not wait to be loved to love. He doesn't wait to be appreciated to give. He doesn't wait to be understood to keep doing good. Because the source of his love does not come from humans who easily change, but from Allah, the Most Merciful, who never stops bestowing blessings on His servants even though those servants are often negligent. Let's make this study a space for reflection. Maybe all this time we have been too busy looking for proof that other people love us, while we have forgotten to prove the sincerity of our love for Allah through morals and sincerity. Maybe we too often count the services we have provided, even though they are all just a gift from Him.
