Luigi's Mansion 2 was first released in 2013 for the Nintendo 3DS and was developed by Next Level Games. Now, the video game has been remastered in HD for the Nintendo Switch by Tantalus and will be released for the hybrid console on June 27, 2024. The story of Luigi's Mansion 2 continues the plot of its predecessor. King Boo manages to escape Professor E. Gadd's captivity and plots his revenge. In Nightshade Valley, Gadd conducts research, aided by the region's friendly ghosts. However, King Boo destroys the Dark Moon, which keeps the ghosts peaceful, causing them to become rabid and wreak havoc in Gadd's laboratory. In a panic, Gadd flees and hides in his secondary lab, known as "The Hideout." He contacts Luigi and summons him using his latest invention, the Voxelporter. Luigi receives the new Poltergust 3000 and embarks on his mission. The gameplay mechanics of Luigi's Mansion 2 are largely similar to those of its predecessor. This time, Luigi is equipped with the Poltergust 3000, an improved version of the Poltergust 8000. This vacuum cleaner allows him to capture ghosts. Luigi also has a flashlight with a built-in strobe light to scare ghosts and a Dark-Light Device that reveals invisible tracks, objects, and ghosts. To defeat a ghost, Luigi must first blind it with the strobe light and then vacuum it up with the Poltergust. Each ghost has a different health bar, which determines how long it takes to vacuum it up. While Luigi is vacuuming up the ghost, a jerk meter charges. When it's sufficiently charged, you can press the A button to deal 10, 20, or 30 damage to the ghost at once, depending on the meter's charge level. Boos present a particular challenge when catching ghosts. They often hide inside invisible pieces of furniture and must first be located with the Dark-Light Device. The game offers a wider variety of puzzles and hidden collectibles, encouraging players to thoroughly explore every corner of the mansions. Unlike the first game, where Luigi explored only one large mansion, Luigi's Mansion 2 features five different mansions. Each mansion has its own theme and unique challenges: the traditional haunted mansion, the overgrown ivy towers, the mysterious engineer's farm, the frosty snow mine, and the paranormal illusion castle. Hidden within each of these areas is a Dark Moon piece, guarded by a Master Ghost. Defeating the Master Ghost unlocks the next area. Each area is also divided into missions that can be repeated as often as desired, for example, to collect more coins or find all the hidden gems (13 per area). Another new feature is that the Poltergust can be upgraded as you collect more riches. This allows you to improve the Dark-Light Device's duration, the jerk gauge, and the suction speed. The Gadd Memory allows you to view captured ghosts, Boos, collected gems, and unlocked extras. There's also a multiplayer mode called ScareScraper, where up to four players can hunt ghosts together online. There are three game modes: Hunter, Sniper, and Speed. In all modes, the goal is to complete each floor within the time limit to advance to the next. Every five floors, a boss ghost appears that must be defeated to progress.
