While the Asian island nation is politically part of the West, it is socio-culturally and religiously deeply rooted in the East. Shinto, the "Way of the Divine" or "Way of the Gods," represents this latter aspect – a non-dogmatic religious practice incorporating elements of Buddhism, imperial worship, and nature religion. Yet this way of life is undeniably formative. Whether in the countless shrines or through the famous tea ceremony: physical and spiritual purity is a prerequisite for walking the path of the divine. And with climate change and the accompanying rise of the environmental movement, Shinto is currently experiencing a resurgence. How is it that this religion is practiced almost exclusively in Japan?
