Hello everyone! We continue our May journey on the sacred Mount Hiei. In this episode, we will show you what is hidden from the eyes of regular daytime tourists. We stayed overnight in the very heart of the Enryaku-ji complex — in the Todo zone! In Japan, there is an amazing tradition called "shukubo" (pilgrim lodgings at Buddhist temples). We checked into a stunning traditional Japanese-style room with tatami mats and futons, tried an incredible temple dinner, and at night, when the mountain was completely empty, went for a mystical walk under the stars. But the main treasures of this place were waiting for us ahead. You will see a real temple bath (ofuro) with a huge panoramic window and a fantastic view of Lake Biwa stretching below. And early in the morning, we caught a golden sunrise right from our room window and attended a morning Buddhist service, where monks beat drums and chant sutras in the twilight of the ancient temple. This is an experience that gives you goosebumps! After a delicious breakfast, we go for a long walk around the main temples of the eastern part of Todo, but more about that in the next episode.
