Today's Gospel passage begins with the question the disciples of St. John the Baptist asked our Lord Jesus Christ: "Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?" In the Old Testament, righteousness was often expressed more in outward signs than inward ones. The Pharisees and scribes envisioned a godly life through fasting and offering certain sacrifices, often quite formal, but they forgot about inner righteousness—love and mercy. Matthew 31:9:14-17: "Then John's disciples came to Him and said, 'Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples do not fast?' And Jesus said to them, 'Can the children of the bridechamber mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.' And no one puts a piece of unbleached linen on an old garment, for the new sewing will tear from the old, and the rent will be worse. Neither do people put new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wineskins burst, and the wine leaks out, and the wineskins are ruined.
