The town of Ballina, on the left bank of the river Shannon in the County Tipperary, and Killaloe (church of Dalua), on the right bank of the river, in the County Clare, used to be important stopping points for barges traveling up the Shannon. Both towns are some thousand years old, and have population of 2600 and 1500 people respectively.
