Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831-1891) Also known as Madame Blavatsky, she was a Russian-born writer, mystic, and theosophist. She was the first to introduce the concept of Mahatmas (also called adepts or masters) to the West. In 1868, she traveled to India, passing through Tibet. On this trip, Blavatsky reportedly met Master K.H. (or Master Kuthumi) and stayed at his residence. She later came into contact with Master M. (or Master Morya), who together privately trained her to serve as their amanuensis, or messenger. Under the guidance of these two masters, Blavatsky wrote several works with profound mystical teachings. She traveled extensively, was sensitive, talented, and temperamental by nature. With El Morya, Kuthumi founded the Theosophical Society in 1875 through Helena P. Blavatsky. The purpose of this activity was to reacquaint humanity with the wisdom of the ages that underlies all the world's religions, the inner teachings preserved in the mystery schools since the last days of Lemuria and Atlantis. The founding of the Theosophical Society took place in New York on November 17, 1875, with the participation of sixteen Theosophists. Theosophy became a worldwide movement that had a profound influence on Western thought.
