After the snow chaos and high avalanche danger, I took advantage of the first stable day for the second stage of the Tyrolean Way of St. James. I started from St. Johann in Tirol with an espresso in the church square – about 34 kilometers to Bruckhäusl lay ahead. The path led through the Leukental valley, past familiar and new trails. The Wilder Kaiser mountain range remained hidden in the fog, but the rumble of avalanches could be heard repeatedly. In Ellmau, I encountered the downside of tourism before the Way of St. James revealed its tranquil, pristine side once again: snow-covered forest paths, quiet stretches, and rustic farmsteads. A true highlight was the impressive parish church of Söll with its magnificent Baroque interior. Exhausted but fulfilled, I finally reached Bruckhäusl – and while sitting on the train, I was already thinking about the next stage.
