The construction of the new Serra das Araras ascent on the Presidente Dutra highway (BR-116) represents a total investment of R$ 1.5 billion. The investment includes: The construction of a new eight-lane roadway (four lanes in each direction) with shoulders. The construction of 24 new overpasses, totaling 4.5 km in length, to smooth out the dangerous curves of the current section. The conversion of the current uphill lane to function exclusively as a downhill lane. Installation of three pedestrian overpasses and two escape ramps. The concessionaire responsible for the investment and execution of the works is CCR RioSP (formerly part of Motiva). The resources for financing the project were obtained, in part, through the largest issuance of incentivized debentures in Brazilian history, with the participation of BNDES. The projected completion date for the new uphill lane is March 2028, and for the downhill lane, March 2029. The Federal Government, through the New PAC (Growth Acceleration Program) and with financing structured by BNDES (Brazilian Development Bank), is investing R$ 1.5 billion in the Nova Serra das Araras project on the Presidente Dutra Highway (BR-116). This billion-dollar project will transform the mountain stretch between the municipalities of Piraí and Paracambi, in Rio de Janeiro, bringing the following improvements: Duplication and new lanes: Construction of new lanes with four lanes in each direction, totaling eight lanes. Complex structures: The approximately 8 km route will include 24 viaducts and escape ramps. Renovation of the old section: The current uphill lane will be converted to a downhill lane. Safety and fluidity: The modernization aims to eliminate one of the country's biggest logistical bottlenecks, reducing travel time and increasing driver safety.
