WH Auden's 60th birthday, Kirchstetten, Austria 1967
Auden must have loved the ceremony. Until 1957, at the age of 50 Auden bought a Kirchstetten farmhouse, and, he said, shed tears of joy at owning a home for the first time. In 1973 Auden died of a heart attack in a hotel room in Vienna. He wanted to be buried in Kirchstetten, and to have a typical Austrian funeral.
