Having said I would definitely go, I couldn’t take a day off—even though I had a cold. (If I had skipped it, people might have thought badly of me.) Having said I would help, I had no choice but to work overtime. (If I had gone home early after saying I would help, people might have disliked me.) As you can see, “手前” carries a delicate feeling of being conscious of how others see you.
