Chapters0:00 Opening1:00 History of Kiryu Washi2:50 Conversations with My Father5:31 The Process of Making Washi8:34 The Beauty of Washi10:16 Challenges Facing Washi Today13:29 The Joy and Meaning Found in Craftsmanship Washi In traditional Japanese papermaking, fibers from plants such as kōzo (paper mulberry), mitsumata, and gampi are dispersed in water, then lifted using a tool called a sugeta.Through the rhythmic back-and-forth motion of a technique known as nagashi-zuki, the fibers intertwine evenly, creating paper that is thin yet remarkably strong—one of the defining characteristics of washi. In the Kiryu region, where the textile industry has flourished for generations, the skills of papermaking have also been handed down through time. How can this tradition be passed on to the next generation? We spoke with Miki Tachibana, who continues to preserve the Kiryu washi inherited from his father.
