Singing along to Fight Song by Rachel Platten provides the opportunity to practice a number of challenging sounds: /ð/, the voiced TH (in THIS), the /f/ sound (in FIGHT) and the /ŋ/ ending sound (in SONG). The voiced TH sound (/ð/) is made by touching the tip of the tongue to the edges of the front teeth. The tip of the tongue vibrates as air flows around the tongue and through the upper teeth while the vocal cords vibrate. If the tongue is not properly placed between the teeth a /d/ or /z/ sound may be produced. Sample words: THIS and THE The /f/ sounds take the same mouth position as the /v/ sound : the lower lip gently touches the top teeth. There is no need to bite or tightly pull the lip. For the /f/ sound do not activate the vocal cords, just allow air to pass through the mouth. If the vocal cords are activated, a /v/ sound will be produced. The /ŋ/ created by the letters N & G, does not sound like /n/ and does not sound like /g/. To make the /ŋ/ sound, raise the back of the tongue until it touches the soft palate - the soft area at the rear of your mouth. Do not release the tongue as you pronounce this sound. Many non-native speakers of English mistakenly release the tongue and create a hard G or K sound. The tongue should remain lifted and air flows through the nasal cavity. Try to hold the sound and feel the sound vibrate through your nasal passages. Note that the letter i, in the words "This is", has the /ɪ/ as in SILVER vowel sound. However the letter S in each word has a different sound. In the word THIS, the letter S takes a /s/ sound, while in the word IS the letter S takes a /z/ sound. The letter i in the word "fight" has the /aɪ/ as in WHITE vowel sound.
