How I stretch watercolor paper- Come tirare la carta per acquerelli-metodo alternativo

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION FIRST, ITALIAN DESCRIPTION BELOW In this video you will see how I stretch my watercolour paper. I want to make clear that this method has worked really well for me , my way of painting and the type of paper that I use, but I encourage you to try the traditional method as well, as only after comparison you can judge what works best for you. This method is a bit different in the final part if compared to the traditional method in which you use gummed tape and a stapler. I call it my " gentle but long method" because I use a good, resistant paper tape, so that at the end of the process, I can remove it without damaging my sheet or having to cut the gummed part away, so I can save the full dimension of my original sheet. It takes long for paper to dry, so you have to prepare your sheet days in advance , you cannot have your paper ready in a few minutes or in hours. The process of drying can take up even to 2 days, depending on the room temperature and humidity grade. In this video I am using Saunders Waterford paper, when it comes to Arches 300gsm NOT 100% cotton , which is the other type of paper that I use, I usually leave it soaking for a longer time instead of just 30-40 seconds, sometimes even 2 minutes, according to how many layers of water water I guess I will apply on my painting. This period of time has been found by trial and error, I still am experimenting and have not found a magic formula that works well for every painting. Be conscious of the fact that water control is important and can affect the final result even if paper has been stretched before. WATCH OUT!!! Please be sure to use sturdy books with a waterproof cover or you will end up with ruined books, which is not what you want. Before removing the tissues and the books, check with the palms of your hands if the paper has fully dried: if it is still a bit damp, it is not ready yet. In questo video vi mostro brevemente il mio metodo per tirare la carta: è un metodo che ho usato fino ad ora e che ha dato buoni risultati per il mio modo di dipingere e il tipo di carta che uso, ma siccome differisce nella parte finale da quello tradizionale con nastro gommato e sparapunti, vi invito a fare altre ricerche e imparare da altri artisti come fanno a tirare la carta: io stessa sto ancora sperimentando e credo che solo dopo il confronto tra i vari metodi si possa scegliere quale funzioni meglio per noi. Io non uso il nastro gommato ma un nastro di carta da imbianchino di buona qualità e resistente: in questo modo, a foglio asciutto, lo posso rimuovere senza danneggiare il foglio e senza dover ritagliare la parte a cui ha aderito il nastro gommato, conservando integra l'intera superficie. La carta impiega molto ad asciugare, perciò i fogli vanno preparati in anticipo, non è pensabile avere il foglio asciutto in pochi minuti o in qualche ora. Il processo di asciugatura, così come è esposto, può richiedere anche fino a 2 giorni, a seconda della temperatura della stanza e del grado di umidità. I tempi di ammollo proposti sono diversi a seconda del tipo di carta, nel video uso un foglio Saunders Waterford ma quando uso carta Arches 300g/mq, NOT, 100% cotone, posso arrivare a lasciarlo a bagno anche fino a 2 minuti, a seconda di quanto penso che dovrò bagnare il mio foglio in fase di pittura. Questi tempi tuttavia sono del tutto empirici, non ho ancora trovato una formula che vada bene in assoluto. Inoltre, anche se la carta viene tirata correttamente, non è detto che poi il foglio non si arricci un pochino lo stesso: molto dipende anche dal controllo dell'acqua e dalle velature applicate. ATTENZIONE: vi prego di utilizzare dei libri con la copertina impermeabile per questo metodo, altrimenti potrebbero rovinarsi e ciò non deve succedere. Prima di utilizzare il foglio, controllate toccando il foglio coi palmi delle mani se è ancora umido: se notate ancora delle tracce di umidità va lasciato ad asciugare perfettamente ancora un po'.
