In this episode of "An Attempt at Understanding," I present an attempt to formulate a theory for understanding the social contract, specifically the Syrian social contract, not merely as a legal text or constitution, but as a psychological, social, and political space that takes shape when individual priorities intersect with the priorities of society. We begin with the classical conceptions of the social contract by Hobbes, Locke, and Rousseau, then move on to Durkheim, Hegel, and Freud, arriving at a fundamental idea: the social contract does not arise solely from the existence of needs, but from the prioritization of needs at a specific historical moment. Why did the Assad contract fail? Why is improving the economy insufficient if people's priority is security? And what happens when one segment of society does not feel that the right to life of another segment is a shared priority? This episode is an attempt to understand Syria after the collapse of the old contract, and the most difficult question: Is it possible to build a new social contract, or has disintegration become the reality?
