The Yogyakarta Monument (Javanese: ꦡꦸꦒꦸꦔꦪꦺꦴꦒꦾꦏꦂꦠ, translit. Tugu Ngayogyåkartå) is a monument often used as a symbol of the city of Yogyakarta, the Special Region of Yogyakarta. Located at the intersection of Jalan Jenderal Sudirman and Jalan Margo Utomo, the monument has symbolic value as a magical line connecting Parangtritis Beach and Panggung Krapyak in Bantul Regency, the Yogyakarta Palace in Yogyakarta City, and Mount Merapi in Sleman Regency. This monument is now a Yogyakarta tourist attraction and is often known as the "White Pal Monument" (pal also means monument) because the color of the paint used has always been white. This Pal monument is oval-shaped with a small ball and a pointed tip at the top. History The White Pal Monument replaced the Golong Gilig Monument, built in 1755. The name 'Golong Gilig' refers to the monument's original cylindrical shape (golong) with a rounded top (gilig)—referring to the philosophy of 'Manunggaling Kawula Gusti', or the unity of the people with their king, and of humanity with the Creator. In the past, the 'gilig' at the top of the monument served as a vantage point during Sri Sultan's 'sinawaka' (meditation) in Bangsal Manguntur Tangkil. The Yogyakarta Monument was erected in 1920. The monument was rebuilt in 1887 to replace the 22-meter-high pillar that was destroyed by the 1867 earthquake. The Golong Gilig Monument collapsed due to a tectonic earthquake on June 10, 1867, and is commemorated with the candra sengkala (seven earths continue to shake) symbolizing the Javanese year 1796. It was not until the reign of Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono VII that the monument was rebuilt and inaugurated on October 3, 1889, when it was then called the White Pal Monument. The reconstruction changed its shape to a square with a pointed tip. Furthermore, the height of the monument, originally 25 meters, was shortened to 15 meters. This new design is suspected to be a Dutch strategy to eliminate the symbol of unity between the king and the people in the previous monument design. Despite the change in the monument's shape, the people of Yogyakarta continue to interpret it as a symbol of the unity of the people with the king, and of humanity with God. The White Monument symbolizes the place of 'Alif Mutakallamin Wachid' (God Almighty, the Almighty, the Greatest of all the worlds). Therefore, the White Monument is philosophically interpreted as the center of human orientation in worship and daily activities, always remembering God's greatness as 'Sangkan Paraning Dumadi' (where humans originate, and where humans return). In 2012, renovations to the monument were completed. Some of the monument's ornaments were also painted yellow with 22-karat gold.
