Plaza de la Reina: The Square That Wasn't Always Here | Slow TV

A slow 4K walk through Plaza de la Reina — Valencia's busiest square, and its biggest lie. Everyone thinks this square is ancient. The Cathedral is here. El Micalet — the bell tower — rises above it. The Baroque Puerta de los Hierros opens onto it. Tour guides say: "This is the heart of Valencia." And it is. But this heart was transplanted. Until 1878, Plaza de la Reina did not exist. In its place stood the Convent of Santa Tecla — a massive complex of nuns' quarters, cloisters, and gardens. The City Council wanted a Plaza Mayor — a grand central square, like Madrid had, like every important Spanish city had. So they demolished the convent. On January 23, 1878 — the very day King Alfonso XII married María de las Mercedes de Orleans — the square was inaugurated and named after the new queen. She died of typhus six months later, at 18. The name lived on. For 150 years, Valencia has been walking across the ghost of a convent, dedicated to a teenage queen who never saw it. During the Republic, it was renamed Plaza de la Región Valenciana. Then briefly Plaza de Zaragoza. The citizens ignored both. They kept saying "Plaza de la Reina" until the City Hall gave up and restored the name. Today, this is the crossroads of the city. Eight streets converge here: Micalet, Pau, Avellanes, del Mar, Cabillers, Sant Vicent Màrtir, Santa Catalina. Tourists with maps, brides in white, old men on benches, flower sellers, buskers with guitars, children chasing pigeons, Japanese tour groups following raised umbrellas. Everyone passes through here. Everyone. The Baroque door of the Cathedral — Puerta de los Hierros — dominates the eastern edge. El Micalet watches over everything, its bells marking the hours as they have since 1418. Here, at your feet, is the Kilómetro Cero — the zero point from which all highways of the Valencian Community are measured. You are standing at the exact centre of the road network for four million people. In 1970, they dug underneath and built a parking garage. In 2022, they pedestrianised it. The cars are gone. The square belongs to the walkers again — as it did in 1878, when the dust from the demolished convent still hung in the air. A square that was not always here. A queen who never saw it. A convent that disappeared. And yet — for 150 years, Valencia has chosen to call this place its heart. Maybe a city decides what its heart is. It does not inherit it. It builds it. No narration. No music. Just the sounds of Valencia's living room: footsteps on stone, church bells, coffee cups, distant guitar, and the murmur of a thousand conversations in a dozen languages. 🎧 Best experienced with headphones 📍 Location: Plaza de la Reina (Plaça de la Reina), Valencia — Km 0 of the Valencian road network 🏛️ Landmarks: Puerta de los Hierros (Cathedral), El Micalet (bell tower, 1418), Km 0 plaque 📜 History: Built 1878 on the site of the former Convent of Santa Tecla · Named after Queen María de las Mercedes (1860-1878) · Pedestrianised 2022 🎥 Real-time, no cuts | Slow TV format 🔊 Natural ambient sounds — footsteps, church bells, street musicians, multilingual city life Perfect for: virtual walking tour of Valencia's most iconic square, Spanish history lovers, or anyone who wants to sit at a café terrace in the sun without leaving home. 🚶 More slow walks → Subscribe 👍 Enjoyed the walk?
