Mandrake The Magician Origins - Legendary Lee Falk's Mystical Superhero - Explored

Long before Batman brewed fear into the hearts of criminals or the mighty Captain America waged battles upon the bad guys, there existed a handsome and stylish superhero who fought crime and criminals with a name that suited his style. This elegant, quick-witted, and epigrammatic man was none other than Mandrake the Magician. He was the master of illusion, the expert magician who learned his tricks and methods deep within the mountains of the Himalayas. Mandrake sported a fine slick mustache, a black hat, and a scarlet cape to fight injustice and crime, and of course, a magician’s wand. The contemporary and mainstream superheroes like Batman, Superman, etc., are known to have a troubled domestic life, but it was Mandrake who started the trend; so much so that his archenemy was his step-brother who went by the name ‘The Cobra’. Most of his enemies were either his family members or a darker and more evil reflection of himself. This has forced many historians and experts to believe that he was the first superhero with powers in the truest sense. However, the comics never dealt with the dilemma that he must have faced when it came down to choosing between righteousness and his family. Mandrake the Magician was created along with The Phantom and made his first appearance in the summer of 1934, as a comic strip. In this video, we will explore this pulp superhero, whose name itself comes from a hallucinogenic plant called mandragora.
