At The Breakers in Newport, 33 of the mansion's 70 rooms were given over to servants. At Biltmore, roughly 40 men and women kept a house of 250 rooms running for as little as $18 a month, on days that stretched 14 to 18 hours. At The Elms, a coal magnate heated his $5 million palace with fuel carried in by a secret underground railway, so that he would never once have to see it arrive. They rose before dawn to light the fires and worked long past midnight, and they were trained to vanish the moment they were seen. This is a single day inside that hidden world, from the first cold grate to the last banked fire.
