The secret isn't the power of the chainsaw, but a properly sharpened chain. In the countryside, in the woods, true lumberjacks don't need a workbench, a vice, or electricity: all they need is a round file and a lot of experience. In this article, I'll explain how chain sharpening really works, from theory to practice, using simple words and fundamental concepts. ✅ Why a well-sharpened chain makes all the difference. When the chain is sharpened correctly: the chainsaw cuts automatically, without forcing it it produces shavings, not fine sawdust it puts less strain on your arms and the engine it extends the life of the chainsaw If it doesn't cut well, it's not the chainsaw's fault, but almost always the dull blade. ✅ How the chainsaw chain teeth are made To sharpen properly, you must first understand what you're sharpening. The chain teeth are made up of three main parts: Upper cutting angle This is the upper part of the tooth: it cuts into the wood from above. Lateral cutting angle This is the side of the tooth that contributes to the cut, working like a plane. Depth gauge This determines how much wood is removed with each pass of the tooth. 👉 Important: only the upper and lateral edges are sharpened, not the depth gauge. The tooth doesn't cut like a knife, but digs like a plane. If it's not polished at the right angles, the chain won't "bite" the wood. ✅ A simple trick for learning: the marker If you're a beginner, color the inside of the tooth with a permanent marker. By running the file over it, you'll immediately see if you're polishing the right parts correctly. It's a simple but very effective method for practicing. ✅ The correct angle of the file (essential!) Vertically (side view) The file should operate at an angle of about 60° from the tooth line It should protrude about 1/5 of its diameter above the tooth edge If you hold the file: too high → the chain cuts poorly, creates dust too low → the chain becomes aggressive, jumps, and can break the teeth ✅ Horizontally (top view) The file should be angled 30–35° from the tooth line. Less than 30° → weak cut, you have to push the chainsaw More than 35–40° → too aggressive cut, vibrations, and engine strain A well-sharpened chain doesn't require pressure: it enters the wood on its own. ✅ The depth gauge: when and how to adjust it The depth gauge should be about 0.6 mm lower than the tip of the tooth. With time and sharpening: the tooth lowers the gauge stays high the chip becomes smaller and smaller Result? The chainsaw cuts less and less. 👉 Every 5–6 sharpenings, it's a good idea to lower the limiter using: a flat file, not a round one at the correct angle and light pressure ✅ Sharpening a chainsaw in the woods: a practical method Even without a workbench, you can sharpen well: Make a deep cut in a large log Leave only the chain protruding: the wood will act as a natural grip Clean the chain thoroughly of sawdust and oil Color a tooth with a marker (you'll use it as a reference) ✅ How to sharpen each tooth correctly Hold the file with two fingers on each side Sharpen only forward, never back and forth Move backward without touching the tooth Make 2–3 equal strokes for each tooth The teeth are alternating right/left: Sharpen all the teeth on one side first Then turn the chain (wearing gloves!) and sharpen the others When you return to the colored tooth, you're done. ✅ How to tell if you've sharpened it properly Try it on dry wood (like chestnut): if it produces large chips → correct sharpening if it produces dust → the work needs to be redone Take it slowly, without rushing.
