Floor vs Raised Radius - The TWO Functions That Control Intake Performance"
Not all intake runner radius designs are created equal. In this video, we explain why we run FLOOR radius in our intake designs versus raised radius configurations you see on other manifolds. The radius position at the plenum/runner transition controls TWO critical functions: 1. Controlling Flow Separation (Vena Contracta) Larger radius reduces the vena contracta effect Minimizes flow contraction and turbulence Keeps air attached to the runner walls Maintains velocity and pressure distribution 2. Wave Tuning & Molecular Interaction Bigger radius = softer wave reflections More gradual transition = longer molecular interaction zone Broader, smoother tuning range vs sharp peaks Better transition length for momentum transfer Floor radius vs raised radius creates different flow characteristics and wave behaviors. We break down: Why floor radius works better for our applications How radius position affects separation points The physics of wave function softening When raised radius might be appropriate This is advanced intake manifold design. Stop copying what you see - understand WHY the radius goes where it does.
