In this segment, we discuss obesity as a chronic disease that demands sound judgment, experience, and medical responsibility. In this segment, we address the most frequently asked question, one that almost always comes with anxiety, doubts, and even negotiations with health insurance: What weight do I need to be to have surgery? We discuss two limits that people often confuse: the numerical weight limit and the critical criteria. It's not about "gaining a little more weight" on purpose to reach a certain number and qualify as a candidate for insurance coverage. It's about understanding when surgery can be a reasonable medical option and when it's better to first exhaust alternatives such as nutritional support and medication. We also touch on the age for surgery and why there isn't a single answer. The doctor explains that today, adolescents as young as fifteen can be evaluated for extreme obesity, with body mass indexes above forty, and that below that threshold, progress can often be made with medical treatment, lifestyle changes, and support to gain time, maturity, and overall health. And, at the other extreme, he explains why he has operated on people seventy-four or seventy-five years old who are in good cardiovascular and respiratory health. A clear reminder that each case is analyzed, not judged.
