Above all, make sure you clean the pool walls a bit before shock chlorination and, above all, filter out any dirt in the sand using the backwash function on the pump. Filter balls can simply be washed in the washing machine at 90 degrees Celsius. The more contaminated the pool is, the higher the dosage, especially of chlorine, needs to be. Since chlorine breaks down over time, you can't really go wrong, but you may have to wait a few extra days for the chlorine residue to break down. Green discoloration is usually caused by algae growth, often due to insufficient disinfection, poor filter performance, or warm temperatures. The good news: With the right measures, you can get it under control. First, you should analyze the current condition of your water. Is the bottom still visible? What does the water smell like? Use a pool tester or test strips to measure the pH, free chlorine, and alkalinity. The optimal pH is between 7.0 and 7.4 – you should definitely adjust this before chlorinating to ensure the chlorine can work effectively. Next comes shock chlorination: Use fast-dissolving chlorine granules (approx. 15–20 g per 1,000 liters of water) to kill the algae. Ideally, chlorination should be carried out in the evening so that sunlight doesn't break down the chlorine too quickly. During this time, the filter system should run for at least 24 hours at a time. Important: Algaecide is only added after the shock chlorination, as otherwise the active ingredients can cancel each other out. Be sure to thoroughly brush all pool walls, the floor, and corners to loosen algae deposits. Once the chlorine has done its work (usually after 24 hours), add a liquid, non-foaming algaecide to eliminate even the last traces of algae and prevent regrowth. Continue running your filter system and backwash regularly. If the chlorination is heavily contaminated, consider using a floor vacuum or even flocculant – the latter only for sand filters. After one or two days, you should already see a significant improvement. Check your water parameters again, adjust if necessary, and ensure your pool stays clear in the future through regular maintenance and proper filter run times.
