Ideal for giving more presence to vocals or making drums sound more "in your face," excited, and solid. Be careful with the attack: even if you set it to "slow," it's still incredibly fast and can ruin transients if you're not careful. They're perfect for controlling dynamics without losing punch, especially with vocals and high-energy instruments. 🔹 Optical compressors (like the LA-2A): They behave more slowly, smoothly, and unstable when working with signals with a lot of transients (like a snare drum). But if you use them with more stable sounds like pianos, they work brilliantly: they provide body, stability, and a bigger sound. Pro tip: Combine them with other compressors that control peaks before entering the optical. That's what we call double compression at my academy, and it sounds amazing. 🔹 Tube compressors (Vari-Mu): This is about colored compression. They're used a lot in band mixing and even in mastering, to achieve that "glue" effect that unites all the elements in a mix and gives it that professional aura we all seek. But be careful if you use it on groups of sounds in the mastering chain: if you overdo it, you can kill the punch. Use 1dB or 1.5dB maximum and you'll see how your sound transforms. 🔹 VCA Compressors: They're the most flexible. You can use them in mixing, mastering, on the kick drum, vocals, whatever you want. They control many parameters (attack, release, ratio, knee, etc.) and allow for super-customizable compression. In the video, you'll see how with auto gain active and lowering the threshold, the compressor prioritizes the impact of the kick over the tail, and how this better defines the kick in the mix.
