Washington Today (2-14-24): House Dem Ldr on NY-3 special election: 'Extreme MAGA Republicans lost'

Different reactions to the Democratic victory in Tuesday's special election in New York's 3rd Congressional District. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) says, "Extreme MAGA Republicans lost. Hopefully, they learned their lesson." Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) says, "The result is not something that Democrats should celebrate too much. Their candidate ran like a Republican." Speaker Johnson also says the House will not be jammed by the Senate into taking up the $95 billion foreign aid bill for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, because the bill does not have meaningful U.S. border security changes. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, just out of the hospital, gives a virtual speech to the group of countries supporting Ukraine's fight against Russia. House Intelligence Committee chair Mike Turner (R-OH) calls on the Biden Administration to declassify information related to an unspecified "serious national security threat." Both the White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and Speaker Mike Johnson say there is no cause for alarm. Three Washington, DC police officers are shot and wounded trying to serve an arrest warrant, and that comes up at today's White House news conference with Press Sec Karine Jean-Pierre.
