Menéndez Pidal: la difícil internacionalización de su obra y figura
The Cervantes Institute and the Ramón Menéndez Pidal Foundation organized this lecture, given by Jesús Antonio Cid, president of the foundation, which analyzed Menéndez Pidal's international influence. The philologist's impact on the universal history of the humanities does not correspond to the theoretical importance and originality of his contributions, despite the enduring relevance of his thought. This may be because he wrote in Spanish, which was not one of the major languages of expression in modern science. For both Central European and North American science, Spain's influence was limited to its exoticism. On the other hand, thanks to Menéndez Pidal's reformist movement, Spanish philological research underwent a Europeanization. However, his objective was to deepen the understanding of Spanish tradition, not to transcend it. This lack of awareness and understanding of the impact of his work was recognized by Menéndez Pidal himself and his disciples, who attempted to address it in two ways: by facilitating the translation of books such as "Los españoles en la historia" (The Spanish in History) into other languages and by promoting campaigns for him to be awarded the Nobel Prize in 1931 and again between 1951 and 1956. ▶ Subscribe to our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/InstitutoCerv...
