What his father taught him about reading water, nobody at that fire had ever bothered to ask about. They only asked whose name was on it. Three days of being the joke at every campfire — until an old cowhand who'd said almost nothing to him gave him one piece of advice worth more than anything else he'd heard that week. Then the Yellowstone came up high off a wet spring, the herd's front started to break apart in the current, and the trail boss had about two seconds to decide whether to trust a voice he didn't know.
