In chess, a desperado is a tactical motif where a piece, often doomed to be lost, makes a final sacrifice to maximize material gain or force a favorable outcome. This can involve capturing an enemy piece before being taken or delivering a check to disrupt the opponent’s plans. The desperado is especially common in complex exchanges, where both sides have hanging pieces, and one side tries to optimize the situation by striking first.
