Secret German bases behind Soviet lines. In November 1942, a pair of Soviet Pe-3s were returning from the Barents Sea to an airfield on the eastern coast of the Kola Peninsula. Suddenly, a trio of white Messerschmitts emerged from the blinding rays of the sun to meet the Soviet pair. Before the Soviet pilots could even comprehend what was happening, their aircraft were shot down almost simultaneously by the first burst of fire. The trio of Messerschmitts, however, did not head west toward their Scandinavian airfields, but turned around and headed south, deep into Soviet territory. Researchers and historians decided to retrieve documents from the archives and analyze the possible location of this mysterious airfield. The search lasted for five years. It wasn't until 1992 that a German airfield was discovered near Lake Okulovo, approximately 200 kilometers northeast of Arkhangelsk. The secret Nazi airfield was established on a sandbar near Lake Okulovo. The German airfield housed not only pilots and support personnel, but also a large airborne sabotage detachment. It is known that the German submarine U-534, under the command of Oberleutnant Herbert Nollau, was en route to the secret German base in the Lena River delta. Immediately after the war, persistent rumors circulated that the German submarine was transporting valuables from the Third Reich to the Arctic. We may not know even 10% of all the secret German bases in the Arctic and Antarctica. But they certainly existed, and perhaps still exist! The mysteries never end.
