CLIFFE: Selby Parish #58 of 74

So this is an elongated village which sits both to the North and South of the A63. It was recorded in the Domesday book as being part of the manor of Howden. With the hamlet of Lund it formed a township in the large ancient parish of Hemingbrough. Until the later Middle Ages it was on the banks of the River Ouse which has since changed its course. William Jacques Drive I imagine, is a reference to the man who in 1919, provided for the distribution of coal in the village, although there is another with the same name. The other William Jacques is a serial book thief who the media nickname the "Tome Raider". He has been convicted twice after stealing hundreds of rare books worth over £1m In 1922, a man named Jennings Tune produced arguably the greatest bowling feat in any recorded cricket match. In the match, against Eastrington, the bowler took all 10 wickets. Tune’s feat was special. He did it within 5 overs, without conceding a single run AND all ten batsmen were BOWLED. That’s quite the amazing feat. You’ll find his name in the Guinness Book of Records Local industry included Whitemoor Mine which was developed in the 1970s as part of the Selby coalfield. After closure in the 21st century the above ground site was redeveloped as Whitemoor Business Park. Going back a bit further, maltings were established near to the railway lines. One of those malthouses still stands South Duffield has quite a bit too. It used to have a landing place on the banks of the river. It, together with Lund, Newhay, Cliffe Common and the main village, all form the parish of CLIFFE. **** My name is Andy. I am armed with a car, a GoPro and an unhealthy amount of time on my hands.
