How to Live With an Open Heart in a Difficult World | Pema Chödrön
We usually think of compassion as something we extend outward, to other people, especially the ones who are easy to love. But Pema Chödrön teaches that real compassion begins much closer to home. You cannot be truly compassionate to others until you have learned to be compassionate to yourself. You cannot pour from a cup you have never filled. In this conversation, she explores what it actually means to live with an open heart in a difficult world. Compassion, she reminds us, is not the same as being nice, and it does not mean letting people walk all over you. Sometimes the most compassionate thing you can do is say a clear and firm no. What compassion asks instead is that we stop running from pain, our own and other people's, because our own suffering is the very doorway to understanding everyone else's. When you have felt something yourself, you can meet it in another without fear. And then there are the difficult people, the ones who irritate us, provoke us, push every button we have. Pema offers the reframe that changes everything: those people are our greatest teachers. They show us exactly where we are still closed, still reactive, still protecting ourselves. Underneath it all is a simple truth she keeps returning to, that we are all far more alike than we are different. Everyone wants to be happy. Everyone is afraid of suffering. When you can rest in that shared humanity, compassion stops being an effort and becomes the most natural thing in the world. Want to go deeper with Pema Chödrön?
