Generally the cow uses its tail to drive away flies and other insects from its body. But the tail cannot reach certain regions like its head, face and especially its dewlap (Ganga dolu). It is very painful for the cow when it gets itching in such areas. At such times cows need a hard and rough surface to rub their skin against. Here comes the need for a roughened pillar (Garuku sthambham) to be erected in a "Gosala". These pillars are very effective in meeting the grooming needs of a cow. While rubbing their skin against such pillars, naturally some strands of hair from its body falls on the ground. This falling of a cow's hair on the ground is considered sacred and according to the Vedas the person who served the cow by erecting a "Garuku sthambham" in a "Gosala" and the past seven generations of his ancestors are entitled to get "MOKSHA".
