Blessed are those who mourn. A meditation by Fr. Eric Nicolai

Fr. Eric Nicolai preaching from Ernescliff College. Matt 5. 4: Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. The reality of mourning. The beatitudes are a source of inspiration and strength through thick and thin. Because he who proclaimed them is risen and alive. He suffered but rose. His friends mourned his loss, but also rejoiced unbelievably when they saw him speaking to them, alive. Lk 6, 21, 25: Blessed are you that weep now for you shall laugh…. Woe to you that laugh now, you shall mourn and weep. Luke tells us something quite revolutionary regarding pleasure and pain. We all understand that pleasure and pain are inseparable in this life. They follow one another with the same regularity that waves in the sea crest and recede behind the swimmer. Everybody’s journey always finds its way to sorrow. It is one of the upside-down blessings.
