Cemeteries of St. Petersburg. Bolsheokhtinskoye Cemetery is the largest necropolis within the city limits of St. Petersburg, covering an area of ​​over 70 hectares. Previously, members of aristocratic families were buried here. After the October Revolution, the cemetery underwent significant changes: three churches located in the Old Believers' section of the cemetery were demolished. In 1935, the Church of St. George the Victorious was closed and then demolished shortly thereafter, leaving the Nikolskaya Church as the only surviving church. The former Old Believers' section became a burial site for Soviet soldiers who died in the Soviet-Finnish War. During the Great Patriotic War, the eastern part of the cemetery was used to bury the fallen defenders of Leningrad. Due to the intense burial activity at the cemetery from the 1940s to the 1970s, almost all the ancient graves were destroyed. The oldest graves and monuments remain near St. Nicholas Church.
