President Tolbert's Speech on April 14, 1979 following the "Rice Riots"
Baccus Matthews and the Progressive Alliance of LIberia called for demonstrations on Easter Sunday, April 14, 1979, in Monrovia, Liberia, against an increase in the price of rice. Deadly violence took place, as demonstrators were killed by police as they sought to approach the executive mansion. In the confusion widespread looting broke out, destroying millions in property across the city. In this speech, the President of Liberia, William R. Tolbert Jr., seeks to calm the country after a day of violence and destruction.
