Law and Mental Health: Expanding the role of Nonclinical Staff: A Case Example of Implementing a Brief Intervention for Suicidality in the Juvenile Legal System - Kathleen Kemp, Ph.D., Kaitlin Sheerin, Ph.D. Kathleen Kemp, PhD, is an Associate Professor (Research) at Brown University Warren Alpert Medical School and a Staff Psychologist at RI Hospital Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Bradley/Hasbro Children's Research Center. She is also the Director of the RI Family Court Mental Health Clinic. She earned her graduate degree in clinical psychology with a specialization in forensic psychology at Drexel University and completed her predoctoral internship at the University of Massachusetts Medical School/Worcester State Hospital. Dr. Kemp completed her forensic psychology fellowship at the University of Virginia's Institute of Law, Psychiatry, and Public Policy and Western State Hospital. She specializes in forensic mental health evaluations with adolescents in the juvenile legal system. Her clinical research focuses on suicide prevention and substance use intervention as well as the dissemination and implementation of evidence-based treatment with youth involved in the legal system. She has been the Principal Investigator, Co-Investigator, or Site Principal Investigator on several university and NIH-funded grants. Her current grant focuses on training community-based clinicians who serve youth involved in the legal system in suicide intervention. Kaitlin Sheerin, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor on the Research Scholars Track at the Brown University Warren Alpert Medical School and a Research Scientist with the Rhode Island Hospital Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Her clinical research focuses on (a) developing, adapting, and evaluating behavioral health intervention and assessment approaches for youth involved in the juvenile legal system and (b) promoting equitable access to quality behavioral healthcare for these system-involved youth.
