Simion Son of Jonah May 10, 2026 Matthew 16 Jesus is in the district of Caesarea Philippi, a Greco-Roman center famous for shrines to Pan and for a yawning cave called “the gates of Hades.” Standing amid idols and pagan lore, Jesus asks His disciples who they believe He is. Simon answers, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (v 16). In response, Jesus singles him out for blessing. The dramatic surroundings intensify the contrast between dead idols and the “living God.” Archaeologists have located the grotto of Pan and first-century inscriptions honoring Caesar as “son of god,” corroborating Matthew’s locale and sharpening the force of Peter’s confession.
