The 184-meter-long container ship Safmarine Agulhas ran aground in June 2006 off the stormy coast of East London, South Africa. After the steel behemoth tragically broke in two, the young Dutch company Mammut Salvage took on the highly complex task of removing the wreck. Experienced salvage experts Foko Ringersma and Hans Hitz relied on a unique, land-based chain hoist system with a massive pulling force of up to 3,200 tons. In addition to the extreme weather conditions at the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, tons of dangerous heavy fuel oil in the hull and the massive resistance of the rocky seabed hampered the operation.
