CPU Cores and Threads Explained for Video Editing, Graphic Design, and Photography
Cores and threads explained for video editing, graphic design, and photography. How many cores and threads do you need for your laptop or desktop computer... Let's find out! What are Cores? Simply put, The amount of “CPUs” on a CPU. Rather than adding additional CPUs to a motherboard manufacturers added cores to the CPUs Each core is capable for the clock speed attributed to the CPU 1.4GHz 2.0GHz 3.2GHz etc... Up until 2005, there were only single-core processors. Around 2005 computer companies started to work on how to get more performance in their machines. At first they tried to add multiple physical cores to a motherboard, but that was too expensive and took up to much room. They decided to add more cores to the original CPU and developed multi-core processors. What are Threads? Basically, threads are virtual cores. Threads are a series of programmed instructions that allow a CPU core to appear to be split into two cores. So for each core, you have two threads: 2 Cores / 4 Threads 4 Cores / 8 Threads 6 Cores / 12 Threads 32 Cores / 64 Threads The more cores and threads you have in your computer the better the computer will be at multi-tasking. Now if you have a SUPER slow clock speed this may hinder your ability to get a lot of speed in each of those tasks, but this is rare since along with a lot of cores and threads comes higher-performing clock speeds. What is Clockspeed? For the sake of the video, I am going to do a short description of Clock speed. Programs require the CPU to continually complete calculations in order to run. If you have a higher clock speed, you can compute these calculations quicker and applications will run faster and smoother as a result of this. *Dedicated Clock Speed video. Now outside of the consideration of the Watts of a processor, the clock speed, and the IPC these are my recommendations for core count for creative professionals: 2 Cores / 4 Threads (Avoid) 4 Cores / 8 Threads (Designers + 1080p) 6 Cores / 12 Threads (Video Editing 4k) 8 Cores / 16 Threads (Video Editing 4k - 8k) 32 Cores / 64 Threads (just CRAZINESS) See you in the next video.
